Learning With Families
How Growth Goes Both Ways at the Family Resource Center
At the Family Resource Center (FRC), we know growth is never a one-way street. Every day, we learn lessons about strength, communication, and what it really means to keep showing up for one another from the families we serve. Our work isn’t just about offering help during tough times; it’s about listening, learning, and growing right alongside the families in our community.
Finding Strength and Finding Voice
Marlo, one of our Reunification Specialists, often talks about how much she learns from the families she works with.
“One family that comes to mind is a mom with three boys,” Marlo said. “After some time apart, the boys were living with their father, and she had to rebuild her confidence. That meant learning how to parent safely, co-parent effectively, and set healthy boundaries.”
At first, every day was a challenge. The boys were arguing, communication with their dad was tense, and the stress felt overwhelming. But week by week, things started to change. This mom practiced new ways to stay calm, stay consistent, and speak up for what she needed.
“Recently, she told me this is the first time after years of services that she’s felt truly heard and supported,” Marlo shared. “It’s been amazing to see how she’s found her voice and her peace.”
Stories like this remind us that progress happens when families are true partners in building the path forward and not just participants in a program.
Healing, Routines, and Resilience
Jennifer, part of our Care Coordination team, shared another story that continues to inspire her.
“She was a mom leaving an abusive relationship and trying to start over with her child,” Jennifer said. “She found safe housing, built a support network, and created new routines. The two of them are thriving now.”
Jennifer says that experience changed how she thinks about teamwork. “Working together, building routines, and creating little family traditions is what strengthens families and keeps them connected,” she explained. “I’m grateful every day to be part of a team that supports families while also supporting each other. It makes this work feel bigger than just a job.”
Connection and Growth Through Understanding
Emily, another Reunification Specialist, often works with families navigating trauma. One story that stands out to her involves a young girl who had been through several foster placements because of behavioral challenges tied to trauma.
“With the help of community partners, we built a support system that included yoga, counseling, and parenting education for her foster parents,” Emily said. “In time, she began opening up and expressing herself in healthy ways. When adoption became possible, I saw how love and consistency can completely change a child’s outlook.”
Emily also shared about a client who once found it hard to engage with services. “Now she tells me, ‘You make me feel calm,’” Emily said. “That’s what trust looks like when people feel seen and respected.”
A Shared Journey of Learning
Through every part of our work, we’re reminded that families have as much to teach us as we have to offer them. Every success story begins with listening.
At the Family Resource Center, we believe that growth happens together. When families flourish, so does our whole community.
