Breastfeeding Awareness Month

National Breastfeeding Month 2025: Forward Together

August is National Breastfeeding Month, a time when communities across the United States come together to recognize, support, and celebrate the nourishing power of breast milk. This year’s theme, Forward Together, calls on us all to center unity, solidarity, and hope in our efforts to support breastfeeding families. At the Family Resource Center (FRC), we are proud to be part of this powerful movement, offering direct support to the communities we serve and uplifting the voices and experiences of local families.

Why Breastfeeding Matters

Breastfeeding is more than just feeding a baby; it’s about nurturing, bonding, and building the foundation for a healthy future. Research shows that breastfeeding brings lifelong benefits to both babies and mothers, including:

  • Babies who are breastfed get sick less often—they’re at lower risk of ear infections, respiratory illnesses, diabetes, and childhood obesity.
  • Breastmilk is uniquely tailored to your child, providing the right nutrition at every stage of development.
  • Moms who breastfeed recover more quickly from childbirth and have a reduced risk of certain cancers.

Perhaps most amazing of all: your baby recognizes your scent and locks eyes with you while nursing, creating special moments of connection and comfort.

Highlights of National Breastfeeding Month 2025

This year, the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee’s theme—Forward Together—emphasizes the importance of community-driven policy and advocacy, breaking down barriers and improving access to human milk for every family. Weekly observances throughout August spotlight the richness and diversity of our collective efforts:

  • August 1–7: World Breastfeeding Week, themed “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” kicks off the month and raises awareness globally about the need for systemic, lasting support for breastfeeding.
  • August 15–21: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Breastfeeding Week focuses on cultural representation and closing health equity gaps.
  • August 25–31: Black Breastfeeding Week addresses disparities within the Black community and highlights efforts to bridge support and education gaps.

These observances remind us how essential it is to tailor resources, education, and support to the unique needs of each community we serve.

How the Family Resource Center Supports Breastfeeding Families

At the Family Resource Center, we are deeply committed to nurturing all families in our community, regardless of background, culture, or circumstance. Our team offers personalized breastfeeding support through our home visiting programs which are designed to meet families where they are, with respect and compassion.

We are excited to share that Leah and Merrilee, Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs), are available to provide evidence-based guidance during pregnancy and after your baby is born. Whether you are preparing for your first child or seeking support for a new challenge, we’re here to listen, answer questions, and empower you on your breastfeeding journey.

Our home visiting programs serve a wide range of families—new parents, multi-generational households, diverse cultural groups, and those facing unique challenges. We strive for equity, ensuring every family receives the knowledge and compassion they deserve.

Breastfeeding is a journey, and no one should have to travel it alone. This National Breastfeeding Month, let’s honor every family’s story and work together to break down barriers, celebrate cultural strengths, and create communities where breastfeeding is supported at every level.

If you or someone you know is pregnant or parenting an infant, reach out to the Family Resource Center.
